Existing East Riverfront Development

Current redevelopment of the East Riverfront District builds on a number of projects completed or in progress.  Among them:
  • Detroit RiverWalk - a linear park along the river starting Downtown and extending 2.5 miles to the MacArthur Bridge
  • Habortown Apartments - a residential development with both low- and high-rise units and access to a private marina.
  • Robert's RiverWalk Hotel - a 106 room boutique hotel nestled in the quaint River Place District of Downtown.
  • UAW - GM training facility - a center for professional learning jointly operated by the UAW and General Motors
  • Milliken State Park and Harbor - Michigan’s only urban state park started with a marina and picnic area, but now includes a demonstration wetlands and connections to the Detroit RiverWalk and other greenways leading inland.   The next phases of conceptual planning is underway.
  • Dequindre Cut Greenway - a lighted one-mile bike and walking path leading from north of Milliken State Park to Gratiot Avenue and  runs along what was once an abandoned railway right-of-way under major Detroit thoroughfares.  The $3 million first phase of the project was funded by grants from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), and the EDC. The $1 million phase II of the Greenway was constructed in 2010 by the EDC,  and connects  the Dequindre Cut to the Milliken State Park and Harbor.
  • Chene Park - an outdoor, riverfront performance venue that seats 6,000.
  • Dave Bing Science and Math Preparatory High School - is part of a greater public charter school district affiliated with the highly successful University Prep Academy (UPA) system of schools.
  • Presbyterian Village - is a retirement community that is planning a second phase of senior apartments.  In collaboration with Henry Ford Health System, the 2nd phase,  $7-million, 50-unit complex just east of the $27.5-million first phase construction is to begin in the first quarter of 2013, with an expected opening in the spring of 2014.
