DEGC Small Business Programs

DEGC is committed to business success through advocacy, information and public-private partnerships.   You don't have to be a major corporation to warrant our assistance.  DEGC has many programs designed specifically to help small businesses grow.
D2D seeks to connect Detroit companies with local suppliers in order to build a community of strong businesses that support each other’s economic successes. This procurement initiative is designed as a coordinating force around the many activities, programs and needs of Detroit’s existing business community and is meant to be integrated into Detroit’s business culture and business support community.

The Green Grocer Project (GGP) supports Detroit’s grocery sector in addressing a significant economic development need with related health concerns - to increase affordable offerings of fresh, healthy foods accessible to all Detroit residents. GGP focus areas are: improved stores and overall grocery sector, creating jobs and supporting entrepreneurs, creating demand and decreasing diet related disease and obesity. GGP provides assistance to full service grocery store operators in the areas of technical assistance, financing, grocer clearinghouse and façade improvement.

Entrepreneurs looking to start or expand their business in Detroit face two major hurdles: 1) It is not easy to find the right space; and 2) even when the right space is found, businesses and building owners may still have financial gaps that need to be addressed before they are ready to open. Motor City Match tackles these hurdles by matching the right buildings with the right businesses while also providing competitive grants, loans and counseling to both building owners and businesses.
Motor City Re-Store (MCR-S) is the new citywide façade improvement program administered by the EDC. The program supports the beautification of storefronts in Detroit’s neighborhoods to make our commercial corridors more walkable, attractive, and better for business. MCR-S will provide up to $500,000 every three months in matching grants to existing business owners and their landlords to improve exteriors of commercial buildings. Eligible improvements range from windows, signage and masonry to landscaping and storm water management. Applicants may apply for design assistance and, once completed, for matching grants and access to small business loans. For more information please contact

NEIdeas is a small business challenge designed to reward ideas for business growth. NEIdeas is intended to support existing businesses in a way that will maintain and strengthen them in the cities and neighborhoods that need them the most. This partnership between DEGC and the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan is designed to help sustain businesses, strengthen neighborhoods and diversify economies. The challenge targets existing businesses, those that have been in business for at least three years. For DEGC and NEI, NEIdeas is about more than just the money though. We are committed to promoting businesses that win, and those that apply. Applicants also gain connections to other businesses that enter the challenge as well as resources and organizations in Detroit that can help them continue to grow.
